Return to Class Request
This letter requests that on the make up day for STAAR, your child be permitted to refuse in the office and return to class rather than have to enter a testing room and stay for four hours. This may be made obsolete by the move to online administration. However, just last year with COVID, we heard of the TEA permitting schools to submit score sheets for scoring based on nothing more than a notice of intent to refuse from the parent. This new approach is discussed in our Article: TEA Confirms: School Can Accept Parental Refusal of STAAR Letter is pending revision on this point but should still work.

That link states nothing about Returning to class on makeup days.

It clearly does, but thank you for noting it. Currently, we are recommending the Request for Facilitated Refusal for return to class situations.

My child has been told that she will not be allowed to go on the field trip if she stays home on the day of the test. This is wrong! It’s like blackmailing them into taking the test that the parent has clearly refused to have her child take!

And it happens every year because adults act like children. Believe me we hear all kinds of false threats. So tell your daughter: “that’s right, you won’t be going on that field trip because you and I will have a much better field trip to celebrate opting out.” Then take her somewhere better.
